What’s the main reason you want to go camping as a family with your kids? Do you have great memories of camping with your parents? Maybe it’s just something you love and you want to share it with your kids. Whatever the reason, camping with kids is an amazing experience. It also takes a lot of planning, right? All that planning can make it difficult to include your kids in the prep work. And that’s exactly why I wrote this camping guidebook for kids. It will help your kids feel more involved in the camping experience. And I guarantee, they’ll be able to teach you a few things about the outdoors along the way!
The Ultimate Camping Guidebook for Kids?
Camping Anatomy: Activities for Kids is written for children ages 8-12. It’s packed with 20 lessons about camping and 20 activities to prepare them for the great outdoors. You’ll find it’s perfect for parents, guardians, and homeschoolers who want to encourage an interest in camping and the outdoors in children.
Here’s what makes it different from other camping books for kids:
- A broad range of kid-friendly camping activities that balance fun with learning.
- A specific focus on activities that kids can experience while camping.
- Journal prompts and activities to engage readers directly in the outdoors and that offer a better understanding of nature.
- Fun facts that inspire readers to develop stronger connections while camping.
- Incredible illustrations that help inspire a love of the outdoors and show readers important information about each activity. Here’s an example of one of the illustrations from the book of different locations of campsites:
Camping Anatomy: Activities for Kids has 5 in-depth chapters. It covers everything from how to find an awesome campsite and pitch a tent, to the incredibly important principles of Leave No Trace. Your kids will learn three different ways to start a campfire and how to tend to it safely and responsibly. They’ll learn about different plants and animals they’ll see along the way. They’ll even learn to predict the weather! There’s so much good stuff in this book. Here’s a glimpse at one of the activities.
Who Is Camping Anatomy: Activities for Kids Written By?
Well, me. Mr. Wilderdad. Steve Lemig. You might ask, “Is this guy even qualified to write a camping guidebook for kids?” I’m glad you did. And the answer is yes. I’m like that Farmer’s Insurance ad: I know a thing or two because I’ve seen a thing or two. Here are a few reasons why.
First off, I’m an outdoor athlete, environmental advocate, and father. And yes, I founded Wilderdad.com because I wanted to create an online dad blog that shares instructional how-tos and stories to inspire families to enjoy outdoor adventures together.
I’ve written about parenting and the outdoors for Sierra Club, Red Bull, Fatherly, Hike It Baby, and Colorado Parent. When I was 19, I got a crash course in outdoor survival as a Hotshot Wildland Firefighter. That season, I was often left in the wilderness for days at a time to fight wild fires with little more than a shovel and what I could carry on my back. I learned a lot of about the outdoors real fast. Like sleeping on the ground with just a space blanket. Or warming my food in fire at the base of blazing trees. Even first aid to care for injuries in the backcountry.
Since then, I’ve run the Pikes Peak Trail Marathon four times, completed a 42-mile run across Grand Canyon, and finished a 1000-mile bike camping tour of the Pacific Coast. In my spare time, I camp, hike, fly-fish, bike, and snowboard as much as I can with my adventurous wife and 12-year-old daughter. Bottom line: I love the outdoors, I know the outdoors, and I hope I can help inspire a new generation to love and care for the outdoors as much as I do.
